چکیده

We have developed and built a highly accurate laser strainmeter for geophysical observations. It features the precise length measurement of a 100-m optical cavity with reference to a stable quantum standard. Unlike conventional laser strainmeters based on simple Michelson interferometers that require uninterrupted fringe counting to track the evolution of ground deformations, this instrument is able to determine the absolute length of a cavity at any given time. The instrument offers advantage in covering a variety of geophysical events, ranging from instantaneous earthquakes to crustal deformations associated with tectonic strain changes that persist over time. An automatic alignment control and an autonomous relocking system have been developed to realize stable performance and maximize observation times. It was installed in a deep underground site at the Kamioka mine in Japan, and an effective resolution of 2 × (10 − 10) m was achieved. The regular tidal deformations and co-seismic strain changes were in good agreement with those from a theoretical model and a co-located conventional laser strainmeter. Only the new instrument was able to record large strain steps caused by a nearby large earthquake because of its capability of absolute length determination. OPEN ACCESS Technologies 2014, 2 130

An optical vernier technique for in situ measurement of the length of long Fabry–Pérot cavities

We propose a method for in situ measurement of the length of kilometre-sized Fabry–Pérot cavities in laser gravitational wave detectors. The method is based on the vernier, which occurs naturally when the laser beam incident on the cavity has a sideband. By changing the length of the cavity over several wavelengths we obtain a set of carrier resonances alternating with sideband resonances. From...

Fiber-Optic Temperature Sensor Using a Fabry–Pérot Cavity Filled With Gas of Variable Pressure

We report a high-temperature fiber-optic sensor based on measuring the spectral fringes of a Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity on a microstructure fiber (MF) when the gas pressure in the cavity is varied through the holes in the MF. Theoretical analysis shows that the absolute temperature can be deduced from the slope of the spectral shift versus pressure curve, which requires no calibration and is insen...

Use of distributed Bragg reflectors to enhance Fabry–Pérot lasing in vertically aligned ZnO nanowires

An optically pumped ZnO nanowire laser with a 10-period SiO2/SiNx distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) was demonstrated. Stimulated emissions with equally distributed Fabry–Pérot lasing modes were observed at pumping powers larger than 121 kW/cm2. This result, when compared to nanowires of the same length and without a DBR structure, shows that a lower threshold of pumping power, higher quality fa...

Measurement of long-term denudation rates in carbonate landscapes using in situ-produced 36Cl cosmogenic nuclide

ecent progresses have been made in the quantification of denudation of eroding landscapes and its links with topography. Despite these advances, data is still sparse in carbonate terrain, which covers a significant part of the Earth’s surface. We can now measure in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides concentrations in various near-surface materials, allowing accurate quantification of the rates o...

Who were Fabry and Pérot?

In 1897 Charles Fabry and Alfred Pérot published their most important article on what we now call the Fabry–Pérot interferometer. Despite the great importance of this instrument for present-day research in physics and astrophysics, its inventors are almost completely unknown to most physicists. This article presents brief accounts of the life and work of Fabry and Pérot, who at the beginning of...
